"When officers arrived, they found a male being restrained on the ground by numerous residents who live in the area," police said in a statement. "Witnesses directed officers to a residence where they found the unresponsive victim."

Mario Brancato, 26, described by police as a transient, was arrested and booked on suspicion of murder.

"It was determined that the restrained male was the suspect who had assaulted the victim," police said. "The victim was transported to an area hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries."

Police identified the fatally injured man as Chuong Pham of Garden Grove.

"At this time, there is no known connection between the suspect and the victim," police said.

Anyone with information about the case was urged to call Detective Rogers at 714-741-5413, or police investigations at 714-741-5800.
