Families turn to mediators to resolve elder care conflicts

More people are turning to mediators to help resolve family conflicts surrounding elder care.

KNX News’ Karen Adams spoke to Cynthia Saffir, with Elder Resolution Partners in Los Angeles, about how the mediation works. The first thing to know is that mediators are not therapists.

“We don't look to the past. We can't fix anything that's happened and we can't make anybody feel less hurt about what's happened in the past,” Saffir said.

However, these mediators can help families resolve any conflicts around an aging loved one.

“It isn't always just a case of if the aging parent has dementia or Alzheimer's, and it could be that the parent initiates the mediation because they don't really know how to broach the subject of rest of life decisions or how to get all of their adult children on the same page with respect to what their wishes are,” she said.

Saffir said getting a mediator is cheaper than bringing in a lawyer and better than ending up in court.
