The family of a man shot and killed by a sheriff’s deputy in East Los Angeles is upset that the district attorney has offered the former deputy a plea deal with no jail time.
In March 2021, David Ordaz Jr.’s sister called 911 to report that the 34-year-old father of three was suicidal and under the influence of meth.
“He’s also talked about suicide by cop, so I am afraid for that,” she said on the 911 call.
L.A. County sheriff’s deputies responded to Ordaz’s home, and body cam footage shows him holding a knife and refusing to put it down. The deputies shot Ordaz with a beanbag round, then he stepped forward and the deputies opened fire, shooting him 12 times.
One of the deputies, Remin Pineda, kept firing at Ordaz as he lay on the ground, even after another deputy told him to stop shooting, according to prosecutors.
Pineda was charged with assault with a firearm and assault under color of authority, both felonies. He was offered a plea deal of 250 hours of community service.
At a press conference in front of the Hall of Justice on Monday, Ordaz’s sister Hilda Pedroza slammed the plea deal.
“We are not satisfied with this decision. We want jail time,” she said. “If not, then that’s okay, don’t give us jail time right now. Let’s take this to trial. Give us that.”

Ordaz’s partner, Jazmine Moreno, also said she’d rather see the case go to trial.
“If they don't want to give him any agreement that gives jail time, then let it go to trial,” she said.
The deputy is expected to be sentenced on Tuesday.
