Renters whose apartments were destroyed in the Palisades or Eaton fires have one month to register for long-term financial aid for housing from FEMA.
Many people whose apartments burned down took part in FEMA’s one-time Displacement Assistance Program, which covered up to 14 days in a hotel. But when that money runs out, FEMA Region 9 spokesperson Brandi Richard-Thompson says there’s another option available.
The Renter Assistance Program initially covers two months of rent, but it can be extended to up to 18 months.
“They also could be eligible for lodging expense reimbursement, which means maybe they weren't a part of that transitional shelter assistance program, but they have rented a place and would like to submit receipts to be reimbursed,” she told KNX News’ Pete Demetriou.
Richard-Thompson said the amount of the assistance can vary.
“Typically it's the HUD fair market rental rate for the number of people in their household, so if they're a family of 4, they can look that up, if they're a family of 3, etc., to determine what they may be eligible for per month for rental assistance,” she said.
