Seven businesses at Old Town Newhall in Santa Clarita were damaged or destroyed in a three-alarm fire early Monday morning.

Around 2:55 a.m., firefighters responded to the 24000 block of North Main St. in Santa Clarita, L.A. County Fire spokesperson Pauline McGee told L.A.’s Morning.

“When the units arrived on scene, they saw smoke and fire showing from the roof,” she said. “ They immediately began fire attacks, going inside to fight the fire. As the fire conditions progressed, they had to come out, pull out, and fight the fire from a defensive mode outside, which escalated to a second alarm. Then it went to a third alarm at 4:42 a.m. this morning for more manpower.”

L.A. County Fire’s Keith Navarre said firefighters first tried to cut a hole in the roof to stop the fire from spreading.

“That failed, and the fire ran through the entire attic of that old commercial building,” he said. “There are many units in there, so unfortunately all those burned. But it was contained to that one commercial building.”

The fire was knocked down by 8 a.m. Officials believe it started at an auto-body shop.

A restaurant called the Newhall Refinery, the Main Theater, an auto-body shop, and a clothing store were among the businesses damaged in the fire.

Navarre also said one person was hurt and taken to the hospital.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
