The first COVID-19 vaccines in Orange County were administered to healthcare workers at Providence St. Joseph Hospital of Orange.

A few nurses, a respiratory therapist and Dr. Paul Sheikewitz were among them. He says it’s been quite challenging since March – the greatest challenge being the burden of the number of patients they see versus the number of staff able to care for them.

"Of course there is also a challenge among each individual healthcare worker and each employee and that challenge is to not get the disease," he says.

He says it’s been very risky.

" We use PPE. We are in the rooms constantly and quite frankly it's more miraculous that so few people have gotten it," he says.

He says that’s why they’re so grateful to have the vaccine.
