On July 31, Carlos Gauna filmed the great white that was spotted about a mile from the Santa Monica Pier and shared the footage on his YouTube channel.

“I just went into trying to identify this shark,” he told KNX News’ Karen Adams. “This shark had a very particular scarring on its face that indicated it could be mating. It could be battle scars. Scars are a good indicator that it's a big shark.”

Gauna said it's not rare to see a shark - juvenile or adult - so close to shore.

"The biggest reminder of an encounter or seeing a large shark near the Santa Monica piers is that we have a really awesome ecosystem right at the doorstep of L.A.'s coastline, and we share the ocean with some pretty awesome creatures there," he said.
