COVINA, Calif. (KNX) — Covina police have arrested a 34-year-old man accused of fatally shooting another man who was among a group of people that suspected the shooter of a vehicle break-in.
The shooting happened late Tuesday night in the 100 block of North Charter Drive where a group of neighbors reportedly attempted to detain the suspect, chasing him to an apartment complex in the 1800 block of Covina Boulevard. It was there the suspected gunman fired off three shots at the group, killing 38-year-old Joey Casias.
Less than 24 hours later, police responded about 4:15 p.m. Wednesday to an apartment complex in the area of Bonnie Cove Avenue and Calora Street after a UPS driver reported seeing a man matching the description of the alleged shooter, CPD said in a statement.
The suspect, identified as Trevor Howard Thompson, allegedly barricaded himself in the outdoor patio area of one of the apartments and refused officers’ orders to surrender and fired a round, according to police.
Thompson allegedly climbed out of the patio area armed with a handgun after nearly four hours and tried to flee on foot, but was taken down by less lethal rounds and taken into custody, police said.
A GoFundMe account established to help the family of Casias — a father of three and a 19-year UPS employee — had raised more than $62,000 as of Thursday morning, exceeding its $10,000 goal.
