Los Angeles (KNX) - People in Highland Park are afraid and fed up with the homeless encampments taking over their neighborhood. Residents say dangerous people are living in them, including one man who walks around with a machete - whacking things.
LISTEN:
Locals tell KNX reporter Emily Valdez they're terrified of him, "I've seen this man over the year walk around with his ax or a saw or a machete," one neighbor said while holding her newborn.
Community members say aside from the weapon-wielding individual, there's a lot of drug activity, and sleeping is hard because crying and moaning can often be heard coming from the tents.
They say they are not complaining about people who are down on their luck; the main concern is safety.
The residents say the city isn't doing enough about it, and when somebody does come to clean out the encampments, the tent occupants walk across the street, wait until the crew leaves, then go back and rebuild.
