After winning the race for Los Angeles County District Attorney, Nathan Hochman told L.A.’s Morning News what people can expect from him on day one.

“I think what you'll see from day one is an immediate switch in the culture and the culture will go back to holding criminals accountable proportionally and in common sense for their actions,” he said. “And sending that important message to the criminals that the day and age in which crimes can be committed and nothing will happen will be over and we will approach each case individually and figure out what the proportional punishment should be for each crime committed.”

He added that his mandate is to look at the facts of each case.

“Look at the individual defendant, their background, the crime committed, and the impact on the victim to determine who the true threats are to our public safety,” he said. “Those are often the repeat offenders that need to be behind bars and the ones that aren't the first-time nonviolent offender(s) still have to pay a debt back to society if they violate society's laws.”

On. Oct. 24, current D.A. George Gascón announced his office will recommend that a judge resentence Erik and Lyle Menendez. When asked how he plans to handle the Menendez brothers case, Hochman said he plans to approach it like every other case, but that he doesn’t have the necessary information at the moment.

“I don't have access to the thousands of pages of confidential prison information, the thousands of pages of trial transcripts,” he said. “I haven't spoken to the prosecutors, law enforcement, defense attorneys, any experts involved and you should and can expect that that type of thorough review will be exactly what I'll do in the Menendez case.”

Resentencing hearings for the brothers will be held Nov. 25 and Dec. 11.
