Homicides in Los Angeles have dropped 16% in 2023 compared to 2022, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

However, the number of incidents where officers shot and killed a person increased, with 16 fatal police shootings this year compared to 14 last year.

Overall, there was a 1.4% rise in Part 1 crimes, which includes several serious violent and property crimes. LAPD Chief MIchel Moore said the increase is mainly driven by rising motor vehicle thefts, while incidents of gun violence are down.

“We have seen an overall reduction of 115 shooting victims versus the same period last year, so our violent crime reduction plan continues to demonstrate merit as well as success,” he said.

A recent L.A. Times study found that while violent crime has dropped over the past decade, car thefts have spiked disproportionately in a handful of neighborhoods, particularly in downtown L.A.
