LOS ANGELES (KNX) — With more than 43,000 new cases of COVID-19 reported in Los Angeles County Monday, the desire for COVID-19 testing appointments and at-home tests could soon be increasing. But before you click "purchase," be sure that you're buying a legitimate test.

Companies like Walmart, Target, Walgreens and Rite Aid are all selling at-home tests online and in-store — and they're going for anywhere from $9.99 to $109, depending on the type of test you're buying.

Many are out of stock, leading some to search the web for tests. So how can you make sure the one you find is real and that you're not accidentally spreading COVID? The Consumer Federal Trade Commission has these tips:

-Research: Make sure the test is authorized by the FDA - you can check it's list for antigen tests here before you buy or its list for molecular tests here.

-Investigate: Look into the seller, especially if you're on a new site. Search online for the website, company or seller's name to see if scams or complaints come up.

-Compare: Check out online reviews for several websites to get a good idea of which companies are out there.

-Credit card: If you're charged but never get the order, you'll be able to dispute the charge.

- Report: Suspect a scam seller or bogus test? Report it to the FTC by sending them an email. The address is ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

L.A. County pick-up test program: L.A. County's testing program is designed to increase COVID-19 testing in the region for those who are having difficulty snagging an appointment at testing facilities.

The Pick-Up Testing Kit program is free and allows all county residents to pick up one PCR test kit, perform the test and return the completed test to designated sites for processing. Results will be sent back in 24 to 48 hours.

"Pick-Up Testing Kits will be available without an appointment and until daily supplies are exhausted at designated locations," county health officials said in a statement.

"In alignment with all our LA County operated testing locations, the Pick-Up Testing Kits will also be concurrently testing for COVID-19 and Influenza (A and B)."

To participate in the program you must either have symptoms of COVID-19 or think you were exposed. In addition, all are required to register, self-test and return the tests in order to get their results.
