Huntington Beach erroneously placed on list of sanctuary cities

Huntington Beach wants everyone to know it’s not a sanctuary city.

The Department of Homeland Security placed the Orange County city on a list of sanctuary jurisdictions last week, despite the city council voting earlier this year to declare itself a “non-sanctuary city” and fully cooperate with the Trump administration’s immigration policies.

Mayor Pat Burns said there were other non-sanctuary cities that made the list, while some declared sanctuary cities – like nearby Santa Ana – were left off.

“Somebody put out a pretty negligent report, I would think,” Burns told KNX News’ Karen Adams.

Burns said Homeland Security told him the list was compiled with information from 2024. The list has since been removed from the department’s website because of the errors.

“Either way, it doesn't justify putting out the report with such inaccuracies,” Burns said. “I mean, that's a pretty damning report in my book, and although I'm understanding about accidents, you got to correct them.”

Burns didn’t mince words, emphasizing that Huntington Beach is absolutely not a sanctuary city and he doesn’t want “criminals coming in here trying to seek refuge.”
