This fire season has been mild so far. But will it stay that way?
KNX News’ Pete Demetriou spoke to Chief Robert Garcia from the US Forest Service about this year’s fire risk. He said rainy days throughout the year have helped minimize tinderbox conditions.
“We've seen some significant Santa Ana winds. However, the fuel moistures, the light fuel moistures, and some of the green that we've received in late summer, early fall rain has really kind of moderated those Santa Ana,” Garcia said. “So we've been very fortunate over the last six months.”
But the potential for another wet winter could increase the fuel load, which concerns him.
About 90% of brush fires in the Angeles National Forest are ignited by humans. This can cause some concern for an increase in fire risk if the area experiences heavy use by the public next summer and fall.
