
That new car in your driveway may be selling data on your driving habits and impacting your insurance rate.
A report by the New York Times found that some car makers, including Kia, Hyundai, General Motors, and Honda, are offering drivers features in the car apps that when used not only assess your driving habits but share that information with data brokers. Data brokers then take that information and share it with insurance companies.
That information could be used to not only increase a driver’s rate or make it impossible for a driver to get insurance.
A Seattle man interviewed in the article revealed he noticed his insurance increased by 21% and that an insurance agent told him his LexisNexis report was one of the reasons why. When he obtained the nearly 260-page report, he found it listed every trip he and his wife made in the last six months, including the distance they traveled and how fast they were going,
One man told KNX News’ Jon Baird it’s awful that it's happening.
“I mean, raising my rates and it's like pervading your privacy,” he said.
