Hundreds of unionized Southern California janitors marched through downtown Los Angeles Tuesday, demanding better wages, benefits, and working conditions.
“Companies have exploited us. Many times we have to endure all of that,” a speaker said during the rally. “Why? Because we are women, because we are immigrants, because we don't have an immigration status that protects us. And so employers get cheap labor that cannot demand its rights.”
Sebastian Silva, communications coordinator for SEIU-USWW, told KNX News’ Emily Valdez the union’s contract is up at the end of April, and they want more.
“It’s about reforming the janitorial industry. It’s about making sure that anybody who works in the janitorial industry, isn’t abused, isn’t exploited, can make a fair living, can earn basic benefits,” said Sebastian Silva with SEIU United Service Workers West.
