LOS ANGELES (KNX) — If Los Angeles' mayoral primary were held today, voters would support the advancement of U.S. Rep. Karen Bass to the November general election by a sizable margin, a new poll by the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies has found.

Just under a third of likely voteds said Bass would be their first choice to replace outgoing Mayor Eric Garcetti. But who she faces off against still remains to be seen — about 40 percent said they had not yet decided who to vote for.

No candidate other than Bass showed support above the single digits, and many likely voters told Berkeley pollsters they didn't know enough about them to have favorable or unfavorable opinions.

“This is really a race for second place. It’s about who is going to join Karen Bass in the top two,” said Mark DiCamillo, director of the IGS poll, told The Los Angeles Times. “Still you’re getting a relatively large chunk of voters with no opinion, and that is to be expected at this point in the race.”

As of the second week of February — the deadline to enter — the race included more than two dozen candidates, including L.A. city councilmembers Kevin de León and Joe Buscaino, property developer Rick Caruso, and City Attorney Mike Feuer.

Four months out from the primary, Bass' advantage is strong. Forty-two percent of liekly voters viewed her favorably, and only 14 percent unfavorably.

Still, 44 percent said they did not know enough about her to have an opinion.

Behind Bass, both de León and Caruso polled second, with eight percent of voters saying they'd support each. Buscainio and Feuer polled at four percent each.
