It was the middle of a baseball game for Downey High School senior Isaac Delgadillo. He had just finished an inning on the pitcher's mound, and his team was up to bat when the umpire suddenly collapsed on the field.

"It was sort of a panic," Delgadillo told KNX Hero's host, Heather Jordan. "Our coach was like, call 911, and luckily, there was, I believe, a fire chief in the stands and a NICU. So they immediately rushed down to help."

Delgadillo took off running - but not toward the umpire; he ran in the opposite direction, straight toward the football field.

"I had just completed my CPR and first aid training in my sports med class. I kind of went through the checklist in my head, right? So I was like, ok, the next best thing I can do is get the defibrillator. We're going to need the AED if it's a heart attack," Delgadillo recalled.

Delgadillo grabbed the AED from the football field and sprinted back. The responders used the device and got the man breathing and talking again, saving his life.

Delgadillo recently met with the umpire and said, "He just gave his thank yous, and it just felt really good to see him; he was doing well."

Our KNX Hero of the Week, Isaac Delgadillo, recently graduated high school and is headed to medical school with plans to become a registered nurse.
