Controlling the stray cat population in our communities is a challenging task - that's where FixNation and our KNX Heroes of the Week step in!

Founded by local cat lovers Karn Myers and her late husband, Mark Dodge, the non-profit provides essential services to thousands of strays throughout Los Angeles.

They started a volunteer program in 1999 when an estimated 3 million homeless cats lived in the L.A. Metro area.

Myers told KNX Hero's Host, Heather Jordan, "We always said, all right, the only way we're gonna hit this kind of number is if we have a full-on clinic, paid staff, and fixing lots of cats every day."

So, the next step was launching the FixNation Clinic in 2007, providing free spaying and neutering services.

"We fix roughly 90 -100 cats a day," Myers said. "We have now fixed over a quarter of a million cats since last November. As far as I know, no one does the volume that we do of community cats every single day."

Myers and her team use human traps to capture and treat the cats, and, if possible, find a new home for them. FixNation also provides education to the community on how to care for stray animals.

Myers said, "Studies show many cats on the street are unfixed pets that have been abandoned, and cats don't stop reproducing without human intervention. Since we have the ability to reduce the breeding, we have a responsibility to do so."

Karn Myers and the whole team at FixNation are our KNX Heroes of the Week!
