Running, reading, and re-energizing the community!
Our KNX Helpful Honda Hero of the Week is helping Los Angeles get back-in-step, after a year of shutdowns due to the pandemic.
And, she's inspiring a lot of people, along the way!
When you meet Lynn Nguyen, you immediately feel her positive energy. Its infectious! "When you talk to her, she's like your best friend! She just really motivates you to be the best person!" explains Dessy Tan, who nominated Lynn as a KNX Hero of the Week. Lynn fits the mold: she's motivational, inspirational, and she's connecting her community.
Following in the footsteps of her mother, Lynn became a librarian after graduating college. "I've been a librarian for almost ten years now, jumping around the different areas of the Los Angeles community," says Lynn. "Now my home base is Chinatown. It just became natural for me to want to put community programs together, and teach children and families about literacy."
During the pandemic, Lynn created weekly career workshops that allowed young people to connect one-on-one with professionals from nearly all industries.
"Like, how to be a producer, or how to become a doctor," says Dessy.
"Many of [the teens] expressed that they weren't going to get a job, and they didn't know what to do," explains Lynn. "They weren't doing well in school, and they were getting distracted. I was like - we need to find ways to make them feel valued and motivated."
Besides the library, you may also see Lynn running up and down the streets of Koreatown! But you'll have to keep up. She's one of the team leaders of the Koreatown Running Club!
And, she's helping strengthen a community. "I love cheering for people!" exclaims Lynn. "I love making people feel good!"
"I love it when we get back from a run, and people are coming up to me, telling me like 'Wow, I didn't know I could run three miles! Thank you for keeping up with me, thank you for keeping me accountable!'" says Lynn. "It's really the people. And, at the end, its taking the time to get to know everybody."
Heather: "Why is something like the running club so important? What does it do for the community?"
"It's really the social connections that we make," says Lynn. "It’s so great for our mental health, and physical health. We also check in with our neighbors, we check in with our businesses, to ask them if they need support."
