Double the talent, double the impact! Our KNX Helpful Honda Heroes of the Week are twin teenagers, who are using their music to help others!
John Neilon plays the saxophone. His twin sister Brenda plays the clarinet. The 17-year-old Los Osos High School seniors have been playing together for a long time. "I can't remember a time when I wasn't playing music!" explains Brenda. "We started off in kindergarten playing piano."
As they got older, they realized they could do more than just play for themselves. They could bring joy to others through their music and raise money for a good cause, at the same time.
"Between middle school and high school, we started Enable Music, which combines the two universal languages of music and kindness," says Brenda.
The teens play for senior centers and private events. They also host concerts, and have even performed in a subway station in Taiwan!
John says during the pandemic they had to make a few adjustments. "There were quite a few roadblocks. If anybody wanted us to perform, we would link-up via Skype or via Zoom, and we'd perform behind the camera for them."
The co-founders say Enable Music gives them a way to help those less-fortunate. "Who doesn't like helping other people?" questions Brenda. "If you have the means to help other people, you definitely should! And, that's the philosophy behind Enable Music."
"If people are interested, they can go to our website," explains John. "What we have, is a link that allows you to donate directly over to Food for the Poor. It's also linked to the Angels of Hope, which allows you to sponsor children in less-fortunate countries."
It’s not just John and Brenda who do all the playing. Their father, Patrick, says Enable Music includes several other young musicians, as well. "Sometimes, when you look and you think about what's with the young people today," says Patrick, "there's a lot of great young people doing a lot of great things!"
