Many residents impacted by the historic SoCal wildfires are starting to revisit their burned down homes as contractors with the Army Corps of Engineers clean up debris.

One of those residents is KNX News’ Nataly Tavidian, who lost her childhood home in the Eaton Fire.

On Tuesday, Nataly, her mother, and brother did a walkthrough of the property with the contractors.

For Nataly’s mother, Ida, it was an emotional day.

“It just feels like a funeral,” she said. “It just feels like this is not real. We're going to try to go forward and build new memories in this house that [sic] I raised my beautiful kids.”

Nataly said the process was gentle as contractors explained everything about the damage and what had to go.

The family hoped to keep the chimney and their outdoor wooden fireplace, but the flames left them in terrible shape.

The first thing contractors removed from the property was the metal door, which the family hopes can be refurbished.

“I am hoping to keep this door because this door has been chosen by my husband, the heart of the house,” Ida said.

For Nataly, the silver lining in the process is hope not just for themselves but for their entire community.
