The Los Angeles budget deficit is forcing cuts that could total more than $320 million.

KNX News’ Craig Fiegener reported that the City Council budget committee is going to have to make difficult decisions Thursday when they resume their hearings. The committee is working to deal with the projected deficit of a minimum of $300 million.

Almost every department is expected to face deep cuts, including the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The committee will also have the final say on the $80 million request from L.A. Mayor Karen Bass for Inside Safe, her program designed to address homelessness and mitigate encampments. At least one city councilmember said she’s not impressed with the results of the $250 million given to Bass for the program in 2023.

Bass’ request appears likely to be granted, but it will come with new rules and new oversight. The money would be set aside for Inside Safe, but every time Bass would need to dip into the funds, her team would have to make a case for it to the council.

The city of L.A. has to have a new budget in place by the start of the next fiscal year on July 1.
