LOS ANGELES (KNX) – Los Angeles City Council approved a measure Wednesday that would eliminate proof of COVID-19 vaccination for indoor businesses and large outdoor events.

The measure, introduced by Council President Nury Martinez, goes into effect when Mayor Eric Garcetti signs it.

The vote was 13 to one, according to City News Service. Councilman Mike Bonin voted against the measure, saying last week, “I know it feels like we’re out of the woods. It feels like we’re all going back to normal. But there’s new variants and new strains all the time.”

Councilman and L.A. mayoral candidate Joe Buscaino told KNX it’s time to move on.

“All these precautions that have been taken to protect ourselves from COVID have had big effects and big benefits, but at the same time it’s time to move on and embrace the fact we know how to live with this virus moving forward,” he said.

Vaccine verification or a negative test will still be required for those who work at healthcare facilities.
