LOS ANGELES (KNX) — Despite an increase in COVID-19 cases and the test positivity rate in Los Angeles County, the Department of Public Health said Monday that hospitalizations remain very low in the county.

The average number of daily new cases reported in the last seven days increased to 960, a 23% increase from the average of 783 daily new cases the previous seven days, according to health officials, who said just 265 people remain hospitalized with COVID-19.

While hospitalizations remain low, health officials said increased transmission of the virus is likely as the BA.2 subvariant circulates and are encouraging all Angelenos to remain up to date on vaccinations and boosters.

As of Monday, 31,807 L.A. County residents have lost their lives to complications due to COVID-19.

"I send my deepest sympathies and wishes of peace and comfort to the many families who have lost a loved one due to COVID-19," said Barbara Ferrer, director of Public Health.

"The evidence is becoming clearer that given the current approved vaccines and the reality of a mutating virus, some of us will need to boost our immune systems a couple of times during the year in order to be optimally protected. This includes those infected with Omicron over the winter, since natural immunity against SARS-CoV-2 also wanes over time."

Ferrer said as the spring holidays approach, it is imperative that all county residents take advantage of available tools to protect against the virus — such as vaccinations, boosters, testing, and masking.
