Los Angeles County is seeing an increase in hate crimes and incidents across many communities.
The L.A. County Commission on Human Relations said they tend to see hate crimes increase around elections. KNX News’ Nataly Tavidian reported that the commission's latest campaign CENTERS around the Armenian community because of a high rate of unreported hate crimes.
“I've been in this country for 50 years. I have personally experienced bigotry now and then many times. It was very painful,” said Zarik Hacopian, who shared her story in the latest campaign video. “Many times it was like I just ignored it. It's been really on the increase. The type of bigotry and the type of language I hear is very taunting, very, very hurtful, and people are very scared to come forward.”

She said many Armenian families believe nothing would be done if it’s reported. She also said some people are scared of retaliation. But Hacopian said if people don’t speak up, the cycle will continue.
People can report hate crimes on lavshate.org or by dialing 2-1-1.
