The Department of Social Services in Los Angeles County is spreading the word about California’s “food stamps” program, CalFresh.

May is CalFresh Awareness Month. The rules for the program have changed quite a bit in the last few years in terms of who qualifies and for how much, according to Gabriela Gomez with the L.A. County Department of Social Services.

“If you were receiving it before or if you were denied CalFresh benefits before, you can always reapply,” she told KNX News’ Nataly Tavidian.

Gomez said that anybody who is a United States citizen or a permanent legal resident can apply for the CalFresh program. The amount of money that somebody receives is dependent on their income and the number of people in their household.

There will be events going on throughout the month of May to help people apply for benefits.

“Consistent access to food is the foundation of a strong and healthy community. However, many low-income households and individuals face considerable barriers when applying for CalFresh,” the L.A. County Department of Social Services said in a press release.
