A group in Los Angeles is helping dogs in animal shelters become more adoptable.

Dog Coalition LA is a nonprofit that pairs shelter dogs with fosters.

“We are shelter volunteers who are in the shelter day in and day out, getting to know dogs and then pairing them with fosters based on best fit,” the group’s Carter Goffigan told KNX News’ Karen Adams. “Then once a dog goes home, we provide this really hands-on support to set the fosters and the dog up for success.”

The hands-on help, according to Goffigan, includes free leash training classes at parks.

“The goal there is to get the dogs really comfortable and confident being on leash, particularly in high-stimulation environments, and also to build the handling skills of our fosters,” she said.

She added that there are also weekly Zoom calls to check in with fosters to discuss the dog’s progress.

“The goal of that call is really to identify and nip any potential issues in the bud,” she said.

Goffigan said since starting the program in 2022, Dog Coalition LA has helped nearly 300 dogs get adopted.
