With Game 1 of the World Series between the Dodgers and Yankees Friday evening, the archbishops of Los Angeles and New York placed a friendly wager to benefit Catholic school students in their respective Archdioceses.
In a 30-second YouTube video announcing the wager, Archbishop José Gomez of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles offered L.A.'s famous Randy's Donuts to Cardinal Timothy Michael Dolan of the Archdiocese of New York. Dolan offered New York bagels to Gomez for his part in the wager.
Catholics and "all people of goodwill" are encouraged to get involved in this friendly exchange, according to the archdiocese.
Donations are being accepted to benefit John Cardinal O'Connor School in New York and the Catholic Education Foundation of Los Angeles. Go to baseballunites.com or follow #BaseballUnites on social media to see how you can donate and support Catholic school students in the name of your favorite team.
The two teams haven't played each other in the Fall Classic since 1981.
"This is going to be a great World Series," Gomez said in a statement.
"Baseball truly unites us as a country but in every contest, there has to be a winner, and that will be the Dodgers! I know my friend Cardinal Dolan is a good sport, and I'm going to enjoy the New York bagels that he will be sending me," Gomez added.
The "winning" archdiocese will receive 60% of the total fund and the other archdiocese will receive 40% of the total fund to benefit the school and the foundation.

All proceeds collected will go directly to the school and foundation, which provide needs-based tuition assistance for students attending Catholic schools in Los Angeles.
"I'm also grateful for this chance to highlight the great work of our Catholic schools in L.A. and New York and across the country," Gomez said. "I have already made my donation, and I encourage everyone to enjoy the World Series and support the great mission of Catholic education. Go Blue!"
Dolan added that he was "grateful" to Gomez for agreeing to this friendly wager.
"I'm looking forward to three things: a great World Series with the Yankees winning their 28th Championship; enjoying Randy's Donuts; raising awareness of and support for the John Cardinal O'Connor School and the Catholic Education Foundation of Los Angeles," Dolan said in a statement.
Game 1 is set to begin at 5:08 p.m., and will be televised by Fox.
