LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The Board of Police Commissioners Wednesday will convene in a special meeting to continue their discussion on the appointment of an interim chief of police with Los Angeles Police Department Michel Moore retiring at the end of February.
While members of the public will be allowed to join at the beginning of the 1 p.m. meeting, the commission will enter closed session for their deliberation. At the end, the commissioners will be expected to announce any action taken.
The commissioners have spent some weeks discussing who would step in as interim police chief since Moore announced his plans for retirement early January. As part of their work, the commissioners under the leadership of president Erroll Southers are working to identify and eventually select an individual to serve as the temporary leader of the department.
At the same time, the board is also identifying the top three candidates as part of a national search. Mayor Karen Bass will then be expected to make a decision for the appointment, or has the ability to ask for other candidates.
Bass has said her office will conduct an extensive outreach process to gather input from LAPD officers, as well as residents of the city.
“It’s a complex operation, so it would make sense to me that the interim chief would be someone with very high-level experience in the department, deputy chief or assistant chief,” former LA Police Commissioner Rob Saltzman told KNX News.
Moore was appointed last year to serve a second five-year term leading the agency. He had not intended to serve the entirety of that term, saying the LAPD should have fresh leadership ahead of the city hosting major events such as the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics.
Moore joined the Los Angeles Police Department in 1981. He was promoted to captain in 1998. His assignments included assuming command of the Rampart Division after a police corruption scandal and serving in a top command capacity at the 2000 Democratic National Convention.
He has served as LAPD chief since 2018, when he was appointed by then- Mayor Eric Garcetti.

Bass said Moore will remain contracted with the city following his retirement to help with the transition to a new chief.
The next police chief will need approval by Mayor Bass, and then by the full City Council.
