LOS ANGELES (KNX) — The City of Los Angeles is accepting applications through Feb. 28 for its new Youth Council, which will empower youth to better their own city, according to organizers.

The Olivia Mitchell L.A. City Youth Council is looking for 30 "empowered youth from across the city" between the ages of 16 and 25 to serve a one-year term learning about the inner workings of city government, driving community projects and making policy and budget recommendations to city leaders.

The group will be under the City's Youth Development Department (YDD) and Department of Neighborhood Empowerment (EmpowerLA). It is named after Olivia Mitchell, who has mentored L.A. youth for several decades.

"The mission of the LA City Youth Council is to speak truth to power, identify bold solutions," organizers said.

"And turn ideas into action to transform our communities in positive, lasting ways."

Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez introduced the motion with Councilman Paul Koretz and Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas, who remains suspended from the City Council following his indictment in a federal corruption case.

The new Youth Council is modeled after a program created by Mitchell, 78, when she was on staff for Mayor Tom Bradley. Koretz previously served in that program, according to Spectrum News 1.

“Olivia Mitchell established the original Youth Council in the office of Mayor Tom Bradley, so it was important to me that we honor that legacy that laid the groundwork for so many of us to be civically engaged,” Rodriguez told the news outlet.

“Availing this opportunity as a paid position demonstrates our genuine interest and value in having diverse participation from every part of our city.”
