‘This is a significant day’: L.A. Unified Superintendent Alberto Carvalho weighs in on lifted mask mandate

LOS ANGELES (KNX) – On Wednesday, the indoor mask mandate for students and staff at Los Angeles Unified School District schools was lifted.

Superintendent Alberto Carvalho told KNX News that the decision of whether or not students want to wear a mask to school is up to them and their parents; however, masks are “strongly encouraged” to be worn.

“Our kids are independent thinkers and we certainly encourage them to make personal decisions that are in their best interests, obviously within the guidelines and the frameworks that we have adopted,” he said. “But look, I think this is a significant day for LAUSD.”

As for the school district’s vaccine mandate, LAUSD approved the mandate for students who are eligible and said in December 2021 that the requirement will remain in place until fall of this year.

Carvalho said that while that decision was made by the board before his arrival, he recommended extending the vaccination deadline.

“I was one who recommended to the board that quite frankly that we should extend the timeline deadline for vaccination,” he said. We continue to check with our medical experts and I think that this is an issue of equivalent importance, but one that requires additional conversation.”
