Postal workers and supporters rallied nationwide Thursday to protest the Trump administration’s plans to make major changes to the US postal service.

"The message is this: the US mail is not for sale," Dominic Davis, Greater Los Angeles Area Local President for the postal workers union, told KNX News' Nataly Tavidian among the demonstrators outside a post office in South Los Angeles.

The Trump administration is deciding whether the USPS should be merged with the Department of Commerce or possibly privatized, as DOGE leader Elon Musk has suggested.

Either option strips the USPS of its independence, and the workers are not interested.

"We're going to say no to Elon Musk. We're going to say no to Donald Trump and those trying to take over the postal service," Davis said. "We don't use taxpayers' money. This is funded by the customers who support us."

He said the USPS needs the community's continued support. "And know that if you want your postal service, don't start the fight when it's gone because it'll be too late."

According to the state's latest numbers, California has nearly 33,000 postal workers earning an average of $60,000 a year, and L.A. ranks second behind the New York area for the number of postal employees.
