LOS ANGELES (KNX) – One day after a crash near Hancock Park Elementary School left a woman dead and a child hospitalized, the Los Angeles City Council’s Transportation Committee will hold a special meeting on traffic safety.

City Councilwoman Katy Yaroslavsky, who represents the area where the crash occurred, said she plans to support a motion to put speed bumps around every elementary school in Los Angeles.

“We need to address street safety in Los Angeles as the crisis that it is," she said, according to City News Service. "That starts with ensuring that Hancock Park Elementary has a crossing guard at the intersection where the accident occurred."

One parent told KNX News he and other parents have been asking for bicycle cops and crossing guards for a while now.

“We always wait for something tragic to happen,” he said.

On Tuesday morning, a woman and a six-year-old girl were crossing the street in the 6200 block of West Colgate Avenue, when a man driving a white pickup truck struck them before crashing into an apartment building.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The child was hospitalized and is currently in critical, but stable condition.

The motorist, described as a man in his 30s, was hospitalized in moderate condition.

While the cause of the crash is still being investigated, Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore said there were “early signs that the man was impaired.”
