Demand for shots continues to drop and fall far short of the level needed to get 80 percent of all residents 16 and older at least partially vaccinated by late August, as officials had been hoping for.
The goal initially was to do it by the end of June.
Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer says the rate has fallen to about 60,000 a week, which is 40,000 less than the 100,000 first-dose shots a week officials wanted.
“While millions have done their part by getting vaccinated, we continue to see fewer folks than we’d like to see,” said Ferrer.
Officials keep having to lower their expectations as the pace of vaccinations slowly but steadily declines.
Ferrer now says the "best-case" scenario is reaching "herd immunity" by early fall.
“The worst-case scenario is that we see a dropoff in people getting vaccinated, and we continue to see a proliferation of the Delta variant,” said Ferrer.
Ferrer says she's "confident" we won't see a repeat of the winter surge, when average daily deaths peaked at more than 250 a day, because many of the people at highest risk are now fully vaccinated.
