LOS ANGELES (KNX) – On Wednesday, the team for Mayor Karen Bass’ Inside Safe program went to an encampment along San Vicente and got around a dozen people off the streets.
One of the people who accepted interim housing, Stephen, told KNX News he wasn’t happy with how the team operated.
For one thing, he said the team was not clear about exactly where it was they were taking them.
“They said downtown and they were kind of secretive about it, which kind of bothered me only because it's like… I mean, maybe because they didn't want media here or they didn't want a bunch of people bandwagon and jumping on,” he explained. “But still, you have to tell us the exact kind of where it is.”
He said where he went wasn’t even downtown.
“It's south of downtown, like 20 minutes,” he said. “Kind of smoke in mirrors. It was really like, they should tell people how far it is because it's not logistically close at all. The point is that some people, they're not good with directions. There's some people out here who are compromised.”
During her State of the city address in April, Mayor Bass said the program has housed over 1,000 people.
Inside Safe, which launched in January, was created to get and keep people off the streets, as well as increase access to treatment for mental health and substance abuse. Encampments in Venice were the first to see the program take action.
