LA County’s public health director says it is highly likely that the County will meet the state standard for reopening elementary schools within the next couple of weeks.
With cases of COVID-19 falling at a very promising rate, the County’s adjusted case rate may very well be below 25 new cases per 100,000 residents in that time.
Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer told the Board of Supervisors that means, under the state program, school districts and independent schools will have an option to reopen classrooms for in-person instruction for grades transitional kindergarten through six.
"Provided two things they are both compliant with state and county reopening directives and they continue to provide an option for online education," she says.
When asked what public health is telling school districts about how they get their teachers vaccinated, Ferrer said there are several options including becoming a certified and approved vaccination site, partnering with a healthcare facility or utilizing community sites.
"We will be spending this week and the early part of next week finalizing those plans," she says.
She said they hope to be able to start vaccinating the next eligible groups of workers which includes teachers in a couple of weeks.
