A homeless encampment on San Vicente Boulevard has grown to 25 or more tents over the past three weeks, drawing concern from local business owners in the Beverly Grove area.
Shelly, who owns an art and design business near the encampment, told KNX News reporter Pete Demetriou that it began with a single abandoned car a few weeks ago, and has since grown to more than two dozen tents. She’s talked to city officials about finding a solution, but they say their hands are tied due to a lack of resources.
“They’re really looking for beds, honestly,” she said. “If they can find beds, they’ll move everyone out. But until then, we’re kind of stuck.”
5th district councilmember Katy Young Yaroslavsky, who represents the area, said that her office’s street engagement and outreach team is actively working to connect the encampment’s residents with resources. The problem is a lack of interim housing beds in the district.
Young Yaroslavsky said her team is working to find shelter beds in adjoining areas, as well as scouting for city-owned land in the district that can be used to develop temporary shelters.
“We have to be flexible and come at this from, I think, a perspective of partnership and collaboration if we’re gonna solve this in a meaningful way,” Young Yaroslavsky said.
