The next big and costly labor negotiation for the city of Los Angeles will be with the L.A. Fire Department.

The current contract for 3,400 members of the United Firefighters of L.A. City will expire at the end of June. KNX News’ Craig Fiegener spoke to Freddy Escobar, the head of the union, about the new deal that they’re pursuing. He said the union wants pay raises totaling 25% over three years.

“I could tell you that we as firefighters have done the right thing and I could stay here forever,” Escobar said. “If you look back, we came to the table when the city asked us to go ahead and defer our raise 18 months. We did. During the pandemic, we were still working while everybody else wasn't.”

He said they also want the city to commit to hiring more firefighters.

The Los Angeles Police Department got a new contract last year that included a 20% raise over the course of four years.
