The Los Angeles Police Department has released body camera video of a fatal shooting on March 19 in Westlake.
The man who was shot, had thrown a hammer at a group of officers who were following him for several blocks. The officers say they believe the man was mentally ill or intoxicated, and fired several foam projectiles at him, with one officer using a taser, while another shot him with his handgun.
The man fell to the ground, and died soon after.
The video has raised questions about how law enforcement deals with people showing signs of mental illness or substance abuse.
The incident is currently under investigation.
The man has been identified as Samuel Ponce.
The city of Los Angeles and Los Angeles County have both recently launched pilot programs to raise the numbers of mental health experts better equipped to handle such encounters.
