Following the deadly terror attack in New Orleans, Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell is considering sending officers to the city to gather intelligence and learn from the incident.

"We often send people to locations where there has been a major incident," Chief McDonnell said. "Let a couple of days pass by so that things are calm down a little and the lessons that can be learned are available."

The Chief emphasized the importance of vigilant observation: "We're always watching what happens elsewhere in the hope that you know it's something that we can use to benefit the citizens of Los Angeles. We're here to provide the safest environment we can."

McDonnell acknowledged the challenges posed by current staffing levels. "There's too few of us to be able to do it the way we'd like to be able to do it, and we desperately need the public to engage and be helpful," he stated.

The LAPD currently employs approximately 8,780 sworn officers, a number Chief McDonnell believes should be increased to at least 10,000 to effectively serve the city.
