Los Angeles Police Department rank-and-file officers clocked 487,541 hours of overtime between July and October, costing the city more than $42.5 million.
The LAPD’s 77th Division officers clocked in the most OT, 34,000 hours worth.KNX News’ Craig Fiegener spoke to L.A. Councilmember Bob Blumenfield, who chairs the budget committee.
“The chief makes those calls when we’re needed, when those overtime is needed,” he said. “If he doesn't spend the overtime or, you know, the chief doesn't, and we have an incident, that's when people hear about it.”

The Public Safety Committee requested the LAPD overtime report in February. Some council members want future reports to track what officers do for each hour of overtime they earn.
The LAPD negotiated a new contract in August that includes a 20% raise over four years.
