The LAPD said the incident happened around 2:35 p.m. Tuesday, when officers from the department's Metropolitan Division ordered several anti- immigration enforcement protesters to leave the area. Daniel Robert Bill, 30, was among those who did not comply, according to initial findings. Bill's place of residence was not disclosed.
"Several uncooperative demonstrators refused to leave the area and confronted officers on the skirmish line," according to an LAPD statement.
Bill is accused of "physically resisting and challenging officers," prompting police to use "a combination of baton techniques and less-lethal munitions ... to no effect," according to police.
"Officers then used a team takedown to take Bill into custody without further incident," police said.
After being detained, Bill complained of pain and was transported to a hospital, where he was diagnosed with a broken finger on his left hand that required surgery, police said.
The department's Force Investigation Division was probing the matter.
