LOS ANGELES (KNX) - Karen Bass has been LA's mayor for 89 days. Wednesday night Bass found herself outside a hospital emergency room discussing the condition of three Los Angeles police officers injured by gunfire.

"The two officers I talked to are strong," said Bass. "Like you would expect, they weren't concerned about themselves."

Wednesday morning during a brief interview Bass gave KNX an update on under her homeless housing initiative called Inside Safe.  "Over 400 now," she said, when asked how many people have been housed since December 12, 2022, when she declared homelessness a citywide emergency.

Last week the mayor's office announced that 10 encampments reduced or eliminated across Los Angeles; however, this week the number remains unchanged.

Inside Safe was a flagship campaign issue for Bass.  She pledged to house 17,000 people living on the streets of Los Angeles during her first year in office.

"We are working together.  We understand the urgency of this moment," said Los Angeles council member Traci Park.  Park's district includes Venice.  "The mayor has a set a very ambitious goal of getting 17,000 people into housing in the first year. It's going to take us some time," Park says.

Mayor Bass hasn't held a press conference regarding Inside Safe since February 7.  On Wednesday she indicated that will change soon.

"We want to sit down and have a full in-depth conversation. I think we're talking about doing it in the next few days," Bass said.

Inside Safe is currently funded with $50 million in initial pilot phase money.  It's unclear how much, if any, has been spent, and if so, on what?

Every Friday, during the first 100 days of the Bass administration, listen for our KNX Original Series— "Tracking The First 100 Days" of the Bass administration.   Reporter Craig Fiegener is keeping tabs on Mayor Bass, her campaign promises, and her efforts to house the LA's homeless.
