LOS ANGELES (KNX) - The City of Compton and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department are teaming up to identify flash mob participants who looted several Compton businesses over the weekend.

The looting took place after a street racing takeover at Alondra Boulevard and Central Avenue. Hundreds of spectators who were watching the takeover broke into groups and looted an Arco gas station and six other nearby businesses, stealing thousands of dollars of items, according to the LASD.

Compton officials are blaming outsiders for most of the damage, but stopping the takeovers is high on city leaders’ priority list, KNX News’ Pete Demetriou reports. They're discussing changes to road services and high-profile weekend patrols to stem criminal activity.

In the meantime, the LASD is looking for evidence from video cameras, social media, and anonymous tips that can be used to arrest the looters.

Sheriff’s officials are asking for those that have information to call the Compton Sheriff’s Station, or use the anonymous Crime Stoppers tip line at 1-800-222-8477.
