The Los Angeles Unified School District is prepping for a new school year with zero-emissions buses.

The district has 56 electric buses ready to take students to class to kick off the school year. LAUSD Superintendent Albert Carvalho told KNX News’ Karen Adams they expect to get 15 more within the next few months.

“And then at that point, every October we'll get 30 delivered until we get to 180,” he said.

There’s air conditioning and Wi-Fi on the buses. Carvalho said every bus, both electric and not, has GPS technologies installed, which allows the district to have eyes on the location of each bus.

But what else can students expect this school year?

“One of the most critical elements specific to readiness is ‘Do we have the workforce we need?’ And much like last year, we're going to start this year with a credentialed teacher in every single classroom across Los Angeles Unified,” Carvalho said.

LAUSD is also preparing to implement a campus-wide cell phone ban for students that goes into effect Jan. 1.
