The Los Angeles Unified School District may reopen an internal investigation after an L.A. Times report revealed that several employees earned a collective $750,000 in overtime in a three-year span, much of it improperly approved.

According to the L.A. Times, a small group of employees from the Westside region, including at least four senior administrators, were investigated for potentially violating the district’s extra pay policies.

The investigation determined “there were no violations of the law,” district officials said. But a March 2021 audit found multiple issues with overtime requests at Local District West, concluding that administrators “did not fully enforce the district policies and procedures.”

LAUSD’s internal investigation led to demotions, reassignments, and departures, but no criminal charges were filed, and no employees were asked to return the extra money.

The improperly authorized extra pay was collected during the run-up to the January 2019 teachers’ strike, when the district said it couldn't afford to give raises to teachers and low-paid nonteaching staff.

Meanwhile, five mid-level administrators and assistants earned between $88,000 and $148,000 in overtime pay over three years, according to testimony obtained by the L.A. Times.
