A new poll shows that families with kids in the Los Angeles Unified School District believe things are looking up in the school district.

The survey was conducted by GPSN, a group advocating for better public schools in L.A., Ana Teresa Dahan, the executive vice president of GPSN, told KNX News that more than 90% of the families surveyed this year report improvements in their schools over the past year.

The poll also found that families feel that kids are performing at or above the right levels when it comes to math and English.

“LAUSD families are most likely to give LAUSD schools a ‘B’ grade overall,” Dahan said. “But they did also indicate that there's still room for improvement and families are looking for more support. They're looking for mental health support, social emotional support for their students.”

Other concerns families had were the economy, as well as the ramped-up efforts to deport people out of the country, and the subsequent impact on the emotional and mental well-being of the kids. The survey also found that families want LA Unified to protect class sizes and teaching materials in the event of budget cuts.

KNX News’ Jon Baird spoke with Tara, an LAUSD mom, who said she thinks “very highly” of the school district.

“I would say I think it's been positive all along throughout the pandemic,” she said. “They really rose to the occasion. So I would agree if parents feel like it's been improving, I would agree with that.”

The survey was conducted in February.
