Los Angeles Unified School District said all students and employees would be required to participate in weekly COVID tests for in-person learning, regardless of their vaccination status.

“Los Angeles Unified continues to collaborate with our health partners at the county and state levels, as well as our panel of medical experts and university partners and we review updates to county, state and federal guidance on a daily basis,” Reilly wrote.

Interim Superintendent Megan K. Reilly announced on the district’s website on Thursday that the requirements are part of the school’s efforts in protecting students and staffers.

In addition to the new requirements, Reilly announced the district would also require masking for all students, employees and visitors, upgrade the air filtration systems and continue sanitizing efforts. She also said the district is collaborating with health partners to support free COVID-19 vaccinations.

“Ultimately, the greatest protection against COVID and the Delta variant is vaccination,” Reilly wrote. “We encourage everyone who is eligible to be vaccinated.”

Reilly said baseline testing will begin Monday, Aug. 2. The district will begin school on Aug. 16.
