Flights have resumed to parts of Mexico where violence broke out after the Mexican military killed the leader of one of the most powerful drug cartels in a shootout.

Some Americans were stuck after flights were canceled to and from some regions there, including Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta.

KNX News’ Jon Baird talked to travelers at LAX, some of whom were heading to Mexico. One traveler said he was apprehensive about going, but he had to fly out there.

“We have some family problems that we got to be there, so we have to go,” he said.

Another traveler said he wasn’t too worried about the violence.

“Usually it's the cartel versus the army, and they go at it, but they don't mess with the tourists,” he said.

Baird also spoke with travelers who had friends and relatives down in the affected areas.

“The Airbnb host was kind enough to let them know they could stay there as long as they needed because of everything going on,” one man said.

One woman said she had friends sheltering in place in Guadalajara.

“Their experience right now is panic because they were like two blocks away, where everything kind of exploded,” she said.

More flights from the area where the violence occurred are expected to come into LAX on Tuesday afternoon and evening.
